Please Don’t Wait for the “Perfect” Moment

There is something really special about senior pets.

Their face gets a little gray, their walk gets a little slower, they start sleeping more or playin less than they used to, or need a little help getting into the car. But somehow, when they look at you, they are still the same puppy or kitten you fell in love with years ago.

Same soul.
Same love.
Same little habits that make them them .

And I think this is why senior pet photography means so much to me.

A lot of people hear “senior pet session” and immediately think it means a sad session. Like you only book it when you know the goodbye is very close.

And yes, sometimes people do choose to photograph those very tender final days. There is nothing wrong with that. Those moments can be incredibly meaningful. But most senior pet sessions are not about sadness - They are about life.

They are about celebrating your old best friend exactly as they are right now — gray face, cloudy eyes, slower steps, silly expressions, favorite blanket, favorite toy, favorite trail, and all.

Sometimes the session is peaceful and quiet. Sometimes it is funny. Sometimes the dog is still full of opinions and wants to do everything their own way. Honestly, that is usually my favorite part.

There is no pressure for a senior pet session to look perfect. Your dog does not need to sit perfectly. Your cat does not need to cooperate. Your pet does not need to act young, energetic, or polished - They just need to be themselves and that is enough.

Here in the Flathead Valley, so many of our memories with our pets are tied to simple everyday things - walks by the lake, sitting on the porch, exploring a favorite trail, riding in the car, muddy paws, a quiet evening at home…

Those are the moments that don’t always feel big while they are happening. But later, they become everything. I learned this through my own animals.

When I lost my English Mastiff, Ash, and later my cat, Kuzya, I realized how much photographs can hold.

Like many of you, I have thousands of digital photos of Ash and Kuzya on my phone. I cherish them deeply, as they highlight countless happy moments we shared. But there are two pictures that hold a special place in my heart—two prints that hang on my wall, bringing me comfort and joy even in my moments of grief .

One picture is of Ash, lying peacefully on his favorite pillow, eyes closed, resting after enjoying his favorite dinner. At the time, we already knew his devastating bone sarcoma diagnosis. We were navigating the stages of grief—shock, denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and, eventually, acceptance. We knew our days together were limited, so we focused on filling them with as much love and joy as possible.Ash was stronger than all of us. He exuded a sense of calmness and peace that helped us face the inevitable. The moment I saw him lying so serenely on his pillow, I knew I needed to capture it. That photograph became a treasure, preserving the love and courage he gave us in his final days. Even 11 years later, I still grieve for my gentle giant, but seeing his picture on my wall fills my heart with warmth and love.

And then there was Kuzya.

Kuzya was our cat, and he was something else. He was not just a cat. He was the king of his world.

Our neighbors called him “the killer” because he had absolutely no fear. He loved the woods near our home and acted like every inch of them belonged to him. Once, he stood his ground against a fox and sent it running. Another time, he decided to join my friend and her two huge Cane Corso dogs on a walk—much to their disbelief. The dogs tried to scare him off, but Kuzya just stared them down until they gave up and accepted him as part of the group.

That was Kuzya.

We lost Kuzya when he was 15. He wandered into his beloved woods one day and never returned. That loss remains one of the hardest for me, made even harder by the lack of closure. But I have a picture of him on my wall, captured during one of his famous, demanding “meows.” It always makes me smile, reminding me of his bold, loving spirit.

And that is what I want to create for other pet parents - not just a pretty picture but a reminder of who they are.

A senior pet session can be slow and gentle because the goal is not perfection - the goal is truth .

Their face. Their personality. Their relationship with you. The way they look at you. The way your hand rests on their head. The way they lean into you without even thinking about it.

Those are the things we want to remember.

So if you have a senior pet, please don’t wait for some perfect moment.

You don’t need to wait until the end, or until they are “old enough”, or until everything feels emotional or urgent.

If they are here, and you love them, that is already enough reason.

Because one day, these photographs will mean more than you can imagine and my hope is that when you see them printed — on your wall, in an album, or held in your hands — they don’t only bring tears, but they bring warmth, make you smile and remind you of the love, the stories, the little quirks, and the beautiful life you shared together.

For over 16 years, I’ve had the privilege of working as a professional pet photographer—and I truly love what I do.

My journey has been shaped by quiet moments of connection, shared laughter, and the honor of preserving memories for families and their beloved companions. Whether I’m spending time with families and their four-legged babies or creating heartfelt portraits at my local animal shelter, this work continues to bring me genuine joy.

And more often than not, I hear the same words:
“You have the best job in the world.”

And I believe I do.

But alongside that admiration, there is often a moment of surprise when pricing is discussed:

You charge how much?
I can get an 8×10 at Walmart for $3.
I can take photos like that on my phone.

And I understand where those reactions come from. In a world where beautiful images can be captured instantly, it’s easy to assume that photography is simply the press of a button.

But what happens behind the scenes tells a very different story.

The unseen hours
A session is only a small part of the process. There is time spent preparing—understanding each pet’s personality, selecting the right location, and thoughtfully planning the experience. Afterward, hours are devoted to carefully refining each image so it reflects both the moment and the emotion behind it.

Experience and artistry
Professional pet photography is not simply technical—it is deeply intuitive. It requires an understanding of animal behavior, light, composition, and timing. This level of skill is built over years of experience, study, and practice.

Patience and connection
Pets are not predictable—and that is part of their beauty. Creating meaningful images requires patience, sensitivity, and the ability to build trust. It’s not about asking them to pose—it’s about allowing them to be seen.

Tools of the craft
Behind each image is carefully chosen equipment—cameras, lenses, and tools designed to capture the finest details: the softness of fur, the light in their eyes, the subtle expressions that make them who they are.

The finishing touch
The work continues long after the session ends. Each image is thoughtfully edited to bring out its full depth and character. And beyond digital files, there is the art of creating printed pieces—tangible, lasting works meant to be held, displayed, and cherished over time.

While professional photography may seem like a luxury, it is, at its heart, an investment in something deeply meaningful.

These are not just images. They are memories—quiet, fleeting moments preserved with intention.

And in the end, what we create together is not simply a photograph, but something lasting.
